Time of Departure | Goc Zamani - Episode 1

Goc Zamani (English title: Time of Departure) is a Turkish drama television series, starring Vahide Percin, Talat Bulut and Tilbe Saran.

Rebelling against family tradition, the powerful mother Cennet flees with her daughters to Istanbul and protects them in a fierce family struggle, as they go in search of their dreams in the big city. Life has been hard on Cennet, forced to migrate and then pushed by her father into an arranged marriage as Cemal’s second wife. A strong woman in a world dominated by men, she must flee with her daughters from Mardin in southeast Turkey to Istanbul and protect them in a fierce family battle.

The arrival of Cennet in Cemal’s family home upsets his first wife Hanım, but she accepts the situation as she cannot have children. While he begins to fall in love with the beautiful Cennet, he is unable to leave his first wife because of her wealth. Hanım is jealous of Cennet, who flourishes thanks to her talent as a carpet weaver. She makes her life a misery and manipulates Cemal against her. When Cennet gives birth to twins, Hanım takes the boy for herself, leaving just the baby girl to Cennet. Cennet’s suffering grows with the birth of a boy Yemin, who is again snatched away by Hanım. He grows up unaware that Cennet is his real mother. Her misery is only eased by the birth of three daughters: Zümrüt, Kiraz and Güneş. The cruelty which Cennet must endure becomes too much when she witnesses the treatment of Zümrüt, whom she wants to study in Istanbul. When she reaches her mid-twenties, Cemal gives her away in marriage to landowner Faysal in order to pay off his debts.

Deciding enough is enough, Cennet rebels against family tradition and decides to take her daughters away. Rescuing Zümrüt from her arranged marriage amid a huge family fight, she flees with her daughters to Istanbul. They discover that life in the big city is full of difficulties. Believing she has brought disgrace on the family, Cemal, Hanım and Yemin go in search of Cennet and her daughters. Cennet finds a place stay in a hotel in Istanbul, but their plight worsens when it is raided by the vice squad and they end up in a police station.

But Cennet has more to worry about, with Yemin determined that she should die in an honor killing for taking her daughters away. Somehow, she must overcome his threats and prove that she is his mother. Cennet’s only hope of salvation is the wealthy businessman Yılmaz, who is one of the longest-standing customers for her carpets. Trapped in an unhappy marriage with his jealous wife Sevgi, he opens the doors of his mansion to Cennet and her daughters. Facing hostility from their own family and the hazards of life in Istanbul, Cennet must prove herself as their protective mother. As the children go in search of their dreams and romance, she must also be there to support them as they cope with the challenges that city life brings.

Kurt Seyit & Shura is about the adventures of two people in love who broke away from their magnificent lives in Russia and were dragged to Istanbul.

The journey of Kurt Seyit, a lieutenant from Crimea, and Shura, the beautiful daughter of a noble Russian family, from the days of magnificence to the Carpathian front line, from the riots to revolution, from Alushta to occupied Istanbul, to Pera in the 1920’s, is in a sense the journey of their love.

Shura comes to Petrograd (St. Petersburg) with her sister Valentina because of their fathers’ illness. Shura meets Kurt Seyit, the noble Crimean-Turkish lieutenant at the first ball they attend. Shura’s father is partners with the Borinski’s and their son Petro is the old fellow comrade of Kurt Seyit. Petro has left the army because of a reason that only Kurt Seyit knows and has got into business with his father. This secret has put a damper on Petro and Seyit’s friendship. While having a good time with his close friends from the army, Celil, Misha and Vladimir, Seyit sees Shura, has a crush on her and can’t get her out of his mind…

Petro’s hidden hatred grows as he realizes that Seyit is in love with Shura. He will continue to stand next to Seyit as his best friend while putting obstacles in his way and trying to destroy their relationship with Shura. Her love to Seyit matures Shura… In time she turns from a young girl to a passionate and self-confident woman who can struggle against difficulties…

Seyit’s father Mirza Mehmet Eminof doesn’t accept Shura as a bride despite her beauty and nobleness… His condition is that Seyit has to marry a Turkish girl… Seyit wasn’t defeated at war but he got defeated against his family. But Seyit doesn’t let go of Shura’s hand despite the deep respect he feels for his father. Seyit’s existence in Crimea is leaving his family in a difficult situation because of the new conditions in the country… Seyit takes a risk and makes a difficult journey towards Istanbul taking his pricks of conscience with him…
A different struggle awaits him in Istanbul which is occupied… While starting a new life, the things they have left behind will be the obstacles on their paths…

Every nation has a trove of stories - alluring, magnetic narratives that are retold time and again. In Turkey, over the past decade or so, Ottoman history - the opulence, conquests and power - has been one of the most popular storylines across media, especially on TV.

"The recent interest in Ottoman stories and Ottoman narratives is not something out of air or without context - it has a historical background," Burak Ozcetin, Associate Professor at Istanbul Bilgi University told The Listening Post's Meenakshi Ravi. "Turkey is a society in constant change, constant flux. In times of crisis especially, history plays a significant role in creation of identities. The rising interest in the Ottoman past in terms of TV dramas has been a really, really important phenomenon."

The demand for Ottoman stories on TV has gone far beyond Turkey. With five seasons, more than 400 episodes and hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, Dirilis: Ertugrul, or Resurrection: Ertugrul, is one of Turkey's biggest television exports yet, and has helped put Turkey among the top exporters of TV content in the world. Set in the 13th century during the founding of the Ottoman empire, the show has helped launch a wave of nostalgia and fascination for the era that has become known as "Neo-Ottoman Cool".

"'Neo-Ottoman Cool' is a term that I and my colleague Marwan Kraidy coined to reflect that new image of Turkey that started perhaps around 15 years ago," says Omar Al-Ghazzi, Assistant Professor at London School of Economics and co-author of the academic article Neo-Ottoman Cool: Turkish Popular Culture in the Arab Public Sphere. "It demonstrated that shift of perception from Turkey as an enemy to Turkey as a model ... Turkish soft power was perhaps at its height with the rise of President Erdogan - this went hand-in-hand with the popularity of Turkish popular culture, particularly Turkish TV series."

"Dirilis: Ertugrul being popular specifically in the Middle East and the Muslim world is fascinating," says Senem Cevik, Lecturer in International Studies at UC Irvine. "A show that is produced by a Muslim country, a Muslim regional power is very important, and having those characters in the shows that are powerful, strong, defenders of their nations and their tribes is something I think I would say the Muslim world is looking for."

For President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the AK Party, reconnecting with the Ottoman era has been central to their messaging. Erdogan has pushed a notion of continuity from the Ottoman sultans through to himself and TV dramas such as Dirilis: Ertugrul and Payitaht: Abdulhamid - both commissioned by Turkey's state broadcaster TRT - have aligned nicely with the AK Party's communications strategy.

"They are, in a way, rewriting the Ottoman history for the current Turkish public. They're trying to showcase a type of history that is continuous from the Ottoman Empire to the current Turkish republic in a way that it elevates the Ottoman history," says Ozcetin. "'Neo-Ottoman Cool' is directly related with the Turkish Republic's quest for enlarging its sphere of influence in the region, both politically, economically and culturally."

This is the story of Hızır, one of the strongest member of the clique that smuggles weapons. However neither of them told Meryem about it. İlyas is in a relationship with step daughter of Ünal, who is Hızır's nemesis. Hızır's late brother's son, Alparslan, whom Hızır raised as his own son, is actually acting as a double agent. And Hızır's son Ömer acts like a bully at school, following his father's footsteps. While Hızır climbs to the top of the mafia world, he tries to protect his family but it won't be easy as he thinks...
