Our review of the Intel Core i5-13400F CPU (which is the same as the 13400, just without graphics) pits it primarily against the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X, vs. the R5 7600, and the i3-12100F. The 13400 is, sadly, just kind of a worse 12600K in many aspects. We'll talk about its limitations and value as compared to AMD and Intel alternatives alike.

This review of the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 tests for efficiency first-and-foremost, as it's significantly improved over the stock R9 7900X. The thermals are also much improved and, although you could get the 7900X to the same numbers by using Eco Mode, this one is significantly cheaper by MSRP alone -- street prices obviously vary. The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 vs. 7900X benchmarks are our first comparison, with the 13700K, 13600K, and Ryzen 5 7600 standing as alternatives in our review.

Error correction (no impact on conclusion or CPU in review): The RTX 4090 chart at 15 minutes 53 seconds has a 3700X result that we've identified is incorrect. It is the only incorrect result. The result should read 235.9FPS AVG, 157.7FPS 1%, and 140.8FPS 0.1%. We identified this error when rerunning the CPU for other tests. We apologize for the error. Fortunately, there is no impact on the Ryzen 7000 CPUs being reviewed; however, we pride ourselves on correcting errors in the rare instances they happen so that the community has the right data. The 5800X, like the 10900K now, is still objectively 'good,' it's just not as impressive as the other new AMD parts for the price. This is the last of our initial 4 reviews we're posting for the AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU launch. We've now tested and reviewed the AMD R9 5950X, 5900X, R5 5600X, and the R7 5800X. We have plenty of other content in the pipeline to help you figure out the optimal combinations for these CPUs. The closest competitor to the 5800X from Intel is probably the 10700K, although the 10900K isn't distant in price, either. Regardless, we've already largely covered how Intel compares to the Zen 3 / Ryzen 5000 CPUs, so we'll direct our focus primarily to how the 5800X does versus the 5600X and 5900X.

The AMD FX CPUs were lackluster enough that, in their later years, most Intel CPU reviews were entirely Intel vs. Intel (like the 6700K, 6600K, 4790K, 4690K). AMD didn't really show up to the fight. Now, it's almost going the other direction in some tests. The Intel 10-series CPUs have become competitive enough to keep 14nm in the ring for a while longer, but mostly in gaming workloads. As Intel works on getting its newer architectures together, AMD is gaining ground each launch. In production tests, it is often just AMD showing up to the fight. Today, we're going backwards in time to a different era for AMD, where the company delivered one lackluster product after another, to see how the advertising has held-up to reality. It's been a major turn-around for the company, and to really put into perspective how big the changes have been, we should look back to the AMD FX-8370 CPU vs. AMD Ryzen 3700X, 3600, 3900X, and Intel i5-10600K, 10900K, and similar CPUs.
