Schon mit dem Festivalerfolg Person to Person konnte Autor und Regisseur Dustin Guy Defa sein Händchen für zutiefst einfühlsame Geschichten aus dem Leben junger Menschen beweisen. Mit THE ADULTS zeigt er nun so sensibel wie humorvoll auf, wie selbst engste Bindungen mit dem Älterwerden auf die Probe gestellt werden.

Eigentlich hatte Eric (Michael Cera) nur einen kurzen Besuch in seiner Heimat geplant, um nach seinen zwei Schwestern zu sehen und seine alte Pokertruppe wieder zusammenzutreiben. Doch je mehr er seinen Aufenthalt verlängert, um sich als bester Kartenspieler der Stadt zu beweisen, desto schwerer fällt es ihm, der turbulenten Beziehung zu seiner Schwester Rachel (Hannah Gross) aus dem Weg zu gehen. Und während die Jüngste Maggie (Sophia Lillis) versucht, die enge Bindung wiederherzustellen, die alle drei einst zueinander hatten, erkennen Eric und Rachel immer mehr die tiefe Kluft zwischen den Kindern, die sie früher waren, und den Erwachsenen, die sie heute sind.

Bei seiner Weltpremiere auf der Berlinale 2023 wurde THE ADULTS als Bester Film in der Sektion Encounters nominiert. Dabei überzeugt die Tragikomödie nicht nur mit Defas feinfühligem Drehbuch, sondern vor allem dank der drei ausgezeichneten Hauptdarsteller*innen: Publikumsliebling Michael Cera (Juno, Scott Pilgrim gegen den Rest der Welt), der bereits in Defas Film Person to Person zu sehen war, sowie die eindrucksvollen Jungstars Sophia Lillis (I Am Not Okay With This, Dungeons & Dragons: Ehre unter Dieben) und Hannah Gross (Mindhunter, Joker).
