Reżyserzy DK Welchman i Hugh Welchman stworzyli film w technice animacji malarskiej znanej Wam z „Twojego Vincenta”, którego zobaczyło w kinach 6 mln widzów. Jednak oba filmy znacznie się od siebie różnią. DK Welchman wyjaśnia: – Skala dwóch filmów jest nie do porównania. „Twój Vincent” to kameralny film, gdzie jest dużo statycznych ujęć, dialogów. „Chłopi” to prawdziwe widowisko. W filmie mamy imponujące sceny tańca, bitwy. To niesamowicie dynamiczne ujęcia, kamera często wędruje za bohaterem, wiele dzieje się w kadrze. Praca nad dwoma filmami oczywiście przynosiła wyzwania, przy „Twoim Vincencie” tworzyliśmy wiele autorskich rozwiązań, „Chłopi” stawiają jednak poprzeczkę znacznie wyżej.

Początkowo studio BreakThru Films nakręciło film z aktorami. W „Chłopach” bierze udział plejada polskich gwiazd, m.in. Mirosław Baka, Ewa Kasprzyk, Andrzej Konopka, Sonia Bohosiewicz, Małgorzata Kożuchowska, Robert Gulaczyk, Maciej Musiał, Dorota Stalińska, Julia Wieniawa. W głównej roli – Jagny − występuje Kamila Urzędowska. Następnie ponad 100 malarzy w czterech studiach w Polsce, na Litwie, w Ukrainie i Serbii malowało olejne obrazy na płótnie, które stały się klatkami kluczowymi w filmie. Artyści do tej pory poświęcili ponad 200 000 godzin pracy. Do malowania wykorzystano farby marki Cobra firmy Royal Talens. Farby te są rozpuszczalne w wodzie, dzięki czemu są znacznie bardziej ekologiczne i zdrowsze dla malarzy. Animatorzy uzupełniali ujęcia namalowane przez malarzy, by całość filmu była płynna i przyjemna dla oka.

Scenariusz filmu opiera się na epopei Reymonta, za którą dostał Nagrodę Nobla, pokonując Thomasa Manna, Thomasa Hardy'ego i Maksyma Gorkiego. Powieść „Chłopi” uważana jest za najbardziej wiarygodną kronikę społeczeństwa chłopskiego, jaka kiedykolwiek powstała. – Reymont swój opis świata malował słowami, podczas gdy my malujemy film dosłownie w stylu jemu współczesnych z ruchu Młodej Polski, do którego Reymont też należał. Na dużym ekranie pojawią się interpretacje dzieł takich artystów jak Józef Chełmoński, Ferdynand Ruszczyc czy Julian Fałat – dodaje DK Welchman.

Powieść i malarstwo wzbogaca porywająca muzyka korzeni zinterpretowana przez Łukasza L.U.C.-a Rostkowskiego. Kompozytor wraz ze słowiańskim kolektywem światowej klasy muzyków stworzył magiczny pejzaż dopełniający piękno malowanych obrazów. W projekcie biorą udział m.in. Tęgie Chłopy, Laboratorium Pieśni, T.Etno czy Maria Pomianowska.

Za produkcję „Chłopów” odpowiada BreakThru Films. „Twój Vincent”, poprzednia produkcja studia, zarobił ponad 42 miliony dolarów od premiery kinowej, co czyni go jedną z najbardziej udanych animacji wszech czasów dla dorosłych widzów. Po premierze obrazy z filmu objechały świat na specjalnej wystawie. Obrazy te są już w sprzedaży i można kupić je na stronie: LovingVincent.com/Paintings.

Autorami zdjęć do „Chłopów” są Radosław Ładczuk, Kamil Polak i Szymon Kuriata, kostiumy przygotowała Katarzyna Lewińska, a scenografię Elwira Pluta. Szefem animacji malarskiej jest Piotr Dominiak, za postprodukcję odpowiadają Łukasz Mackiewicz i Michał Janicki. Dystrybutorem filmu w Polsce jest NEXT FILM.
